How to Attend SPMPS
The Process
All students who attend the Summer Program in Mathematical Problem Solving must meet the qualifications and must complete an interview with one of our staff. The interview is a chance for you to ask us questions and for us to meet each other. You can read more about both below.
Qualifications
All students must:
- Live in New York City.
- Attend 7th grade during the 2011-2012 school year.
- Attend a school where at least 75% of students receive free lunch. (Our program is designed to reach those most in need. If you're interested in a math program but don't attend such a school, get in touch and we'll recommend some places to you!)
Interviews
The interview is a chance for you to ask us questions and get to know about the program. It's also a chance for us to get to know you. Why are you interested in math? What makes the program interesting? How well do you tackle challenging puzzles? We'll talk for a while, give you a puzzle to solve (that doesn't use math directly), and give you a couple of math problems. It'll take about twenty minutes, and we'll keep it relaxed.
Next Steps
If you came here because your teacher gave you information about the program, then talk to him or her about what to do next. If you came here on your own and you think you might be interested in the program, contact us and we'll talk about how to apply.
